Badami

Badami

Badami was the capital of the Early Chalukyas, who ruled most of present day Karnataka from the 6th to the 8th Centuries AD. The town, previously known as Vatapi, is famous for its cave temples carved out of the sandstone hills around Agastya Tirtha Lake.

The town was named Vatapi based on the episode in Ramayana relating to Sage Agastya and the two demons Vatapi and Ilvala who used to kill people by tricking them.

BADAMI CAVE COMPLEX
These caves, dating back to 600 and 700 AD, have been carved out of the sandstone hills next to Lake Agastya. All the caves have a similar plan with an entrance verandah (Mukha Mandapa), leading to a columned hall (Maha Mandapa) and then to a small shrine (Sanctum Sanctorum, Garbhaghrha).

The architecture is a beautiful blend of Nagara (North Indian) and Dravidian (South Indian) styles.

A narrow and crowded street branching off the town center leads to the Temple Complex. Since the street passes through the village, it is better to curb the urge to walk it out.
