Shayna – planning for the pooch

Dog Transport

Well, it’s been over 4 days since Madhu first mooted the idea of an extended trip around Asia – and it’s still on! I consider this a good sign…

For the past few days, Madhu’s focus has been on finding the best options for our 3 1/2 yr old golden retriever, Shayna, while we are away traveling. None of our family members in India have ever had a pet so leaving her with them for such a long trip is not possible. The best option is to keep her in a boarding facility close to where they live so that they check on her occasionally and ensure that everything is going well. But then we were not sure of what kind of pet facilities are available in India so that made us a little nervous initially.

Madhu spent quite some time online and finally found a pet hotel very close to where Amma lives – Thane! Its run by a vet and sounds quite good. My mom can easily visit Shayna at this facility and also bring her home whenever possible. We were thrilled to have found this place. Moreover, Madhu found another lady in Grant Road who is a certified dog handler and is willing to board the dog for long stretches at her home. She has dogs of her own, which means that Shayna would have company. It’s nice to have a couple of options for her boarding…

We also need to figure out Shayna’s transport to India. We have read horror stories of dogs having to travel in tiny crates and suffering from dehydration due to the long journey. There are ‘pet movers’ or ‘pet relocators’ who could possibly help with the actual transport but they could be very expensive. Madhu’s looking into this. I’ll post our final plan as and when we come upon it…
