Manali turned out to be the perfect end to our long tour of India’s northern states, which started at Himachal and ended right back there.
Dalhousie
Dalhousie is built on and around five hills. Located on the western edge of the Dhauladhar mountain range of the Himalayas, it is surrounded by snow-capped peaks.

Dalhousie was named after Lord Dalhousie who was the viceroy in India at the time (1854) when the British Empire established it as a summer retreat for its troops and bureaucrats.
Gautam Guesthouse, Khajjiar
As usual we had not booked a hotel in advance for our stay. We’ve always managed to find a place, though. In this peak season all hotels in the mid-range and upwards category get booked out well in advance.
The Glade, Khajjiar
The Glade (6500 ft above sea level) sits on a small plateau, with a small stream-fed lake in the middle and thick forests along the perimeter.
Khajjiar, Himachal’s Mini Switzerland
Originally developed as a golf course by the British, Khajjiar’s large, undulating meadow is now a very popular tourist spot. It has a tiny lake in the center and a paved walkway that encircles it.

Today, after 4 days of lazing, we tore ourselves away from Orchard Hut, bid adieu to the Dhami family and our Canadian friends, and took a cab to Khajjiar
