Thiksey Gompa
Thiksey Gompa is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery belonging to the Gelugpa sect (Yellow Hat), atop a hill about 20 Kms E of Leh.

Located at an altitude of 3600 metres, it is the largest gompa in central Ladakh.
Main entrance
The roof provides excellent views of the surrounding villages of Shey, Stok, and Matho.

The gompa serves as the residence for approximately eighty lamas. The complex includes an elementary school for the local kids. Some of these kids are later selected to become lamas.

The Maitreya (future Buddha) temple was installed to commemorate the visit of the 14th Dalai Lama to this monastery in 1970. It houses the largest (15 m high) Maitreya statue in Ladakh.
