Santhome Cathedral Chennai was originally built in the 16th century by the Portuguese explorers, and then rebuilt again with the status of a cathedral by the British in 1893.

In 1897, when Swami Vivekananda visited Chennai after his return from the West, Iyengar hosted him at the Ice House where he delivered some of his most famous lectures.
