Bikaner was founded in the late 15th century by Rao Bika, the second son of the founder of Jodhpur. He set out on his own and carved out a kingdom for himself.

Junagarh was built by Raja Rai Singhji, who ruled Bikaner from 1571 to 1612 AD. The fort was originally known Chintamani and was renamed to Junagarh.
