Sani is where the Stod Valley broadens into the central plain of Zanskar. The Sani Gompa belongs to the Drukpa Kargyu school of Tibetan Buddhism.

Padum
Padum is the largest town and administrative center for the Zanskar tehsil. Lately it has become a major trekking base for expeditions into the Zanskar region.
Penzila Pass
Penzi La pass, which is about 160 Km from Kargil and at an altitude of 4400m, is the highest point on the Kargil – Zanskar road.
Drang-Drung Glacier
The Drang-Drung, the largest glacier in Ladakh, is situated near Penzi La). The peaks surrounding it remain snowcapped throughout the year.

The drive to Padum was absolutely gorgeous, which I enjoyed in spite of my ill-health; the pot-holed, almost non-existent road didn’t help matters either.

Instead of using the motor-able road up to it, we used steep, narrow foot-trail that led us up to its rear entrance. There we were greeted by three giggling Lamas.
