Kamakhya Temple
This shakti temple, situated atop Nilachal Hill in western Guwahati, is an important pilgrimage destination for Tantric worshipers. It was built in first millennium during the time of Kamarupa.

It has a very unique architecture with a beehive-like shikhara and sculptured panels and images of Hindu gods and goddesses on the outside.

As per the local legends the temple came into existence when Lord Shiva was carrying the corpse of his wife, and her “yoni” (female genitalia) fell to the ground at the spot where the temple now stands. Here tantrik Hinduism has been nurtured by generations of tantrik priests down the centuries.

Madan Kamdev
The ancient Madan Kamdev temple (11th/12th Century), dedicated to Lord Shiva, is situated 40 kms from Guwahati.
It was discovered in 1977 when the thick foliage in the region was cleared by Archaeologists, revealing ruins of dozens of temples. Sadly the complex has now been completely destroyed by the locals and tourists. The 40km trip is now definitely not worth the effort to visit Assam’s answer to the Khajuraho.
