The original name of Aurangabad was Khirki, which means a ‘window’ or an ‘entrance’. The Aurangabad caves are located on Sihaychal hills running from east to west, about 2 km from the Bibi-ka-Maqbara.
Steps leading to the caves
In all there are ten Buddhist Caves.
These caves were dug out of soft rock during the 6th and 7th century.
These are carved into the Sihaychal ranges, overlooking the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University.
The architecture and iconography have influences from Tantric Hinduism.
A major chunk of the caves are Viharas.
Unfortunately these magnificent caves have been overshadowed by the world heritage monuments of Ellora and Ajanta cave temples.
