Chail Palace was constructed by the Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala in 1891.

The Maharaja had a row with the British because of his dalliance with Lord Kitchener’s daughter. As a result he was expelled from Shimla, the summer capital of British India. He resolved to make a better summer capital for himself than Shimla.
