Little Rann of Kutch : Nava Talav

The Little Rann of Kutch is a seasonally marshy saline clay desert located in the Thar Desert. Rann means “salt marsh” in Hindi. During the monsoons the Rann gets flooded, creating several islands (locally called “bets”).

In spite of a bleak landscape, the Little Rann of Kutch is very rich in biodiversity and is an ecologically significant area for wildlife and many local and migratory waterbirds including cranes, ducks, pelicans and flamingoes.

Nava Talav is one of the few remaining breeding grounds in India for Lesser Flamingoes. These are smallest species of flamingo, though it is still a tall bird by most standards.

Sadly people are killing them for food in the salt marshes Rann of Kutch in India and Pakistan. The Lesser Flamingo is one of the species to which the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA) applies.
