Gangtok Restaurants

Gangtok doesn’t have a huge variety of restaurants but there are enough of them to keep visitors sampling for a couple of days. We tried a few ourselves and enjoyed the experience thoroughly!

Arthur’s Multicuisine Restaurant

This was hands-down our favorite place in gangtok restaurants Gangtok. Owned and managed by affable Arthur, who belongs to Sikkim’s original Lepcha community, the restaurant has a warm, friendly vibe with a lovingly decorated interior. This is Arthur’s first year of operation and it has already garnered rave reviews from travelers. In fact, it was because of the reviews that we had read online that we came in search of the eatery on our 2nd night in town. And we understood why it was so popular just by stepping into the restaurant and taking a seat. The fabulous food was yet to come…

Arthur’s restaurant has the usual Indian Chinese and even a bit of Thai fare. But it mostly specializes in authentic Lepcha, gangtok restaurants Bhutia and Nepali food. Our first night there Madhu tried the Lepcha thali while I tried the Bhutia one. They were unbelievably yummy! Madhu’s thali came with barbecued chicken along with rice, dal, sauteed potatoes. Mine came with a large bowl of noodle soup, which was the best I’ve ever had, and barbecued chicken. We also ordered a plate of Pork Dry Fry, which was fabulous! On our second night there we tried their chicken and pork curries with rice and found that even such simple dishes were lovingly prepared and of really good quality!

But what makes Arthur’s restaurant even gangtok restaurants more special is Arthur himself. He has a very friendly disposition and chatted with us amiably about Sikkim, its history and places to visit around Gangtok. He was forthcoming about what to try in his restaurant and didn’t hesitate to recommend dishes, which was invaluable to us as we had no idea about authentic Sikkimese food. When Madhu asked whether he served the traditional, home-made, barley and millet beer, he said he didn’t but offered to have some specially prepared for us the following day. His staff too was courteous and warm. Overall, this is a very special place to try authentic and yummy food in a wonderful atmosphere!

Tripti’s

Address: NH31A, Gangtok, Sikkim 737101
Phone: 91 3592 223464

This little cafe is located below street level just next to Domino’s Pizza. It serves pastries, cakes, puffs and rolls along with coffee. It has just about 5 to 6 tables and is staffed by a friendly bunch of people who give the place a nice, warm vibe. But more importantly, the food there is absolutely delectable and amazingly well-priced. We tried their croissants, puffs, rolls and coffee and loved it all! Unfortunately, they don’t serve any tea, which would have been a nice alternative to those who don’t particularly care for the strong, bitter coffee that they serve. But then that doesn’t seem to deter the youngsters who patronize the place especially for their dessert pastries and cafe mochas! This was our favorite breakfast joint!

Allen’s Kitchen

Address: Opp Private Jeep Stand, NH 31A, Gangtok, Sikkim 737101

From Arthur we learnt that Allen’s Kitchen is owned and managed by his brother Allen. Apparently, Arthur worked there for a while, learning the ropes, before starting a restaurant of his own. Intrigued we gave Allen’s Kitchen a try and didn’t regret it.

The restaurant is located on NH 31A and is probably the only one there that is open until late. So it gets a lot of foot traffic unlike Arthur’s, which is tucked away in a backpacker area. Also Allen’s doesn’t serve any authentic Sikkimese food but offers Indian, Chinese and Thai food with pictures of the dishes on the menu card to help choose from. We tried rice with chicken curry and pork curry, momos and noodles. Everything was freshly prepared and of very good quality. Since the restaurant was just a few meters away from our hotel it was a very convenient place to stop by for dinner.

Baker’s Cafe

Address: MG Road, Gangtok, Sikkim 737101
Phone: 91 3592 220195

While strolling along MG Road one afternoon in search of a place to eat, we stumbled upon Baker’s Cafe, which is located on the first floor of a shopping complex. As the name suggests it’s mainly a bakery that serves snacks such as sandwiches, rolls, hot dogs, pastries and cookies. When we walked in we were delighted to see bottles of wine lining the shelves on the walls. But we later learnt that it was just for display – no wine was served .

Food at the bakery was good but nothing great. The server looked bored and even forgot a couple of things that we had ordered. But it is a good lunch place just to take a break from shopping on MG Road, with cups of tea and snacks. We ate sandwiches and a chicken hot dog, which was quite well made!

Gangtalk

Address: MG Road, Gangtok, Sikkim 737101

The same evening that we ate at Baker’s Cafe, we stepped into Gangtalk for a glass of wine. Its upper floor location looked quite snazzy from the outside and that’s what attracted us to it. Inside too it was quite impressive with nicely decorated interiors and a lovely terrace-porch overlooking MG Road. We sat here and a heater was placed close to the table to keep us comfortable. We snacked on Bruschettas with the wine and found it to be extremely well-prepared. If it hadn’t been that early in the evening (around 5:30pm), we would have probably stayed back for dinner. For the location and ambience, the food was reasonably priced as well. Overall, a great place to lounge in over drinks.

This is really interesting take on the concept. I never thought of it that way. I came across this site recently which I think it will be a great use of new ideas and informations about restaurant reviews. Thanks a lot….

You couldnt have described the server at Baker’s Cafe more accurately 😀 Had gone there last weekend to find a server whose attitude bordered towards arrogance 😀 Served me cold water on a freezing winter day and either refused or forgot to bring me extra plates as requested. The food was good but the service leaves a lot to be desired.
