Nyingmapa Monastery

The Nyingma is the oldest of the 4 main schools of Tibetan Buddhism. It comprises of several lineages all of which can be traced to Padmasambhava.

The word Nyingma literally means ‘ancient’. It was founded when the Buddhist scriptures were translated from Sanskrit to Tibetan. The Tibetan script, grammar and structure were all created for this endeavour. The lineage is now based in Kham, Tibet.

Nyingmapas are classified into Red and White Sanghas. White Sanghas are the non-celibate practitioners, whereas the Red Sanghas are celibate, monastic practitioners.
