This Sikkim Trek covers the higher reaches of the Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary in West Sikkim, famous for its rhododendrons and spectacular views of the Khangchendzonga and Everest ranges. The trail passes through dense coniferous forests which are home to a wide diversity of birds. This trek is a delight for birdwatchers with an opportunity to see many rare birds like the Black-breasted Parrotbill, Blood Pheasant, Himalayan Monal and Rusty-bellied Shortwing, besides many varieties of Flycatchers, Laughing Thrushes, Tits and Babblers.
In Barsey one passes through dense thickets of rhododendrons below the Tal mountain ridge laden with conifer forest of silver fir and hemlock. The trek winds its way through the source of two rivers, which originate from moist grassy meadows. After Thulo Dhaap the trail climbs up to the Singalila Ridge opening up grand vistas of the snow capped mountain ranges. The highlight of the trek is the sunrise view of Khangchendzonga and Everest from Phokety Dara view point.
Trek Grade : This trek is graded as Easy.
These Sikkim treks are suitable for beginners; some suitable for kids. Family and small groups can enjoy these trips as the hikes are not very lengthy. These treks may be up to 5 days of walking with about 4hrs (avg) of walking each day. Usually up to 12,000 feet but max altitudes may reach up to 15,000 feet.
Best Season : Mid March to April is the best period to enjoy the blooming rhododendrons. Mid October to mid December is excellent for mountain views.

Pickup from Bagdogra / NJP / Gangtok and drive to trek base village Hee Bermiok.
Day 2 Samathar
Six hour trek to Samathar.
Day 3 Barsey
Five hour trek to Barsey.
Day 4 Joreybotey
Five hour trek to Joreybotey.
Day 5 Khalijhar
Six hour trek to Khalijhar.
Day 6 Chewabhanjyang
Four hour trek to Chewabhanjyang.
Day 7 Uttarey
Four hour trek to Uttarey.
Day 8 Gangtok / NJP
Drive from Uttarey to Gangtok or NJP for your connections.
