Raju’s Guest House
We decided to go to Raju’s Guesthouse mainly because it was ideally located, very close to the Great Himalayan National Park and also because it had rave reviews online.
Great Himalayan National Park
Great Himalayan National Park is the latest addition to India’s National Parks System. The area comprising of the watersheds of Jiwa, Sainj, and Tirthan rivers became the Great Himalayan National Park in 1984.
Bhagwati (Chehni Tower) & Shinga Rishi Temples
The temples have been built as per the traditional Western Himalayan style – alternate layers of stone and timber. This style ensures that during earthquakes, the structures sway instead of resisting the quake.
Shinga Rishi Temple
Shinga Rishi temple, located on the hills above Banjar Market, is a beautiful three tiered wooden structure with shades of green and blue.
Paramjyoti Mandir
The Paramjyoti Mandir, located on the way to Harmony Hall, was built by Stokes in 1937. There are no idols in this temple. There is a hawan kund and a painting of ‘Krishna and Arjuna’ in the inner sanctum.
Harmony Hall
The Harmony Hall, built by Stokes in 1912, has an unique architecture with elements from the local pahadi architecture mixed with those from the West. It was named after his ancestral home in New Jersey.
Saroga Forest Nature Walk
On most days, Thakur Saheb, the amiable host of Banjara’s Orchard Retreat, takes his guests on a nature walk through the Saraoga Forest.

He offered to take us to the village temple in the middle of Marijuana and Pea fields. I think the pea plants were more of a decoy.
