The Government Museum and Art Gallery owes its existence to the partition of the country in 1947.

Before 1947, the collection of paintings, sculptures and decorative arts, were housed in the Central Museum (Lahore).

The division of the collection between India and Pakistan took place on April 10th 1948.
Mahakala, Nepal
About sixty percent of the collection was retained by Pakistan and the remaining forty percent, consisting mainly of Gandharan sculptures and Indian miniature paintings (Mughal and Pahari schools), was handed over to India.
